we were also given the same task to animate the two balls with different wights in 2d animation. I enjoyed this allot more than the 3d approach as i found it easier to create the two effects. in some ways 2d animation can be allot quicker than 3d and i like the style a little more at the moment although it can get a bit tedious drawing the same thing over and over again.
